Brisbane SEQ March GTG

Hi everyone,  a very brief run down on our GTG last Saturday.  Sorry it has taken a while to get up, but I had 'tidied' away the upload thingie for my camera!  There weren't quite as many of us as there were in  February, but we had fun and lots of laughs!  Who came? Robyn Oleinik, Julie Donovan, Sharon Wynne, Margaret (not the cook) Fulton, Chris Murphy, Jakki Orth (a friend of Chris' who was 'dragged' along at the last minute so was sewing-less!), Lynell Jendra and me, Shaaryn Griffiths.  In the photo above, roundabout cuppa tea time, are (l to r), Robyn Oleinik, Julie Donovan, Sharon Wynne, and Margaret (not the cook!) 

First up:  Robyn Oleinik was super busy last month...she completed one Grandmother's Garden hexagon block....and yes, it really is only slightly larger than a $1 coin!!

Then we have a photo of Chris making the table-runner.  

Next we have Lynell.  

Sorry for making you all twist your heads sideways...I couldn't find the tool for turning them the right way round.  Below Lynell's photo is one of the Bronwyn Hayes' blocks she is embroidering, complete with glasses...no, they're not embroidered!

Julie Donovan brought along her completed Breast of Friends quilt top...it's really lovely and I don't think my photo has done it justice.  Julie has put in some of her own blocks as well as the ones from the pattern.

Margaret, (not the cook), was busy sewing up thread caddies and mug bags...I loved the thread caddies, the outside padded bit is padded with wool batting for use as a pin-cushion.  You can use the inner 'bowl' as a thread catcher or for scissors and thread, ...or lollies (:-D)... might just attempt one myself ...one always needs a lolly holder when one is sewing...

Sharon made these lovely embroidered and pieced tablemats.

Sharon also designed and has almost completed this beautiful 'housewife'!  (Again, I'm sorry I wasn't able to rotate the photo.)  

And Sharon also made this lovely little evening bag.  I love the Japanese fabric...dragonflies are a favourite of mine.

Lynell also made a really pretty baby's quilt.  I bet it will be well loved.

See you all next month. Might think up something interesting for next month, to do or to bring...ideas appreciated.  Also, as it is Easter early in the month how about we make it the 3rd Saturday in April, not the 2nd Saturday?  Feedback also appreciated on this.

Photographic evidence that we got together in February! If anything is incorrectly attributed apologies forthwith, and no-one will own up to any responsibilty for them! :-D

Julie Donovan made three fabulous star pattern table runners, all machine quilted with different quilting patterns. Julie also gave a quick lesson in attaching the two ends of the binding together so that they looked seamless... and gave us a small piece of her life philosophy....

"There's no illness so bad that it can't be helped by having something to eat!"

Pam Gilfoyle is the photographer in black and white, and Julie is sitting next to her. Take note of a few of the nice bags, and they weren't even held up for show and tell!

Pam made this beautiful teddy bear quilt. The photo doesn't do it justice, it is really lovely.

Scrap rail fence & appliqué quilt...but Shaaryn's notes got wet and no idea whose lovely quilt this is! Can the maker please own up to their superb workmanship!

Sharon Wynne made this lovely small Starburst quilt. Love the quilting on it. Sharon, did you dye the fabric as well?

And after this, Shaaryn's notes got wet and she has just big blurs about who made which quilt, bag, or item. Any help with correct attribution would really be appreciated!

A sewing envelope made by Pam. This is a really nice wallet, perfect for holding all your sewing things, with clear zippered pockets that let you see what you have.

Helen Smart's Advent calendar, isn't it gorgeous! and just in time for Christmas...2010! Helen decided that she would get an early jump on Christmas this year.

Further progress on Aldona's appliqué quilt started in a Sharon Schamber class last year...quilted and bound by next month?? ;-D

Aldona is also making three quilts for some triplets born to a friend of hers,...the blue one is for Jacob, .......the pink one for Hannah, ......and the yellow one is for Sarah.

Lynn Todd created this scarecrow, colouring it in with pencils, based on a Helen Stubbings design. Beautiful soft colours.

Judy Moore has been making this small hexagon quilt. More soft and gentle colours. It's lovely.

And for madness Robyn Oleinik took the cake – she was covering the smallest hexagon papers ever seen, and fussy cutting the fabric as well. The hexagons were about the size of a thumbnail !!!

A big thank you to Karen and the Quilters Store for having us. And a huge thank you to everyone for coming, and for remembering your donations to the charity quilt group, whose room we used. We handed over a tin with more than $50 in it to Karen for the charity quilt group. A short while ago Karen told Shaaryn that she took over 100 charity quilts to a local hospital to be distributed, so our our using the room is helping a great cause, in addition to our own enjoyment.

6 Dcember Get together

Hi All,

A small but dedicated group of Queensland Scquilters met at the library last Sunday, shared a bite to eat, showed off what they were working on and of course talked heaps.

Eldonna brought along an absolutely gorgeous Christmas themed quilt.

As well as updating us on the progress of her Robin Pandolph quilt.

I brought along my pink water lily which some of you might remember me working on a couple of months back.

Robyn was working on some hexagons, which I unfortunately neglected to take a photo of.

Qld Scquilters GetTogether! Occasionally...

Hi everyone,
we have finally got a blog to keep everyone up to date with what has or will happen at the Brisbane based Qld Scquilters monthly get-togethers. The one that has just happened, on 1 November, was a very small but cheery group...Melissa Fox, Helen Smart and Shaaryn Griffiths.
Melissa brought along a beautiful quilt, with hand appliqued circles, which Melissa was making for her mother's 60th birthday....Shaaryn wanted to know if Melissa would adopt her...

Helen had several lovely quilts, one was a Malaysian batik 'wholecloth' quilt. It looked really stunning. Helen had used an entire batik sari for the top and another for the back, and then handquilted around all of the batik motifs on the top. Her other quilt was a heavily beaded blue on blue quilt... Helen's version of a Lisa Walton quilt 'Aurora'. The beading was beautiful.

Shaaryn brought along a quilt top, a version of Natalie Ross's 'Ladybugs on Parade' which she is making for her sister-in-law, who wanted a bright happy quilt to put on a sofa. It really is cheerful.

Our next Get-together is on Sunday 6th December. Same place, same time... Brisbane Square Library, 266 George Street (at the top end of Queen Street near the Victoria Bridge). We kick off at 11am. We'd love as many people to come as possible. And we ask that everyone brings a plate of something Christmassy to eat and share. Also, if everyone could bring a small wrapped present, to the value of say $10 worth of materials, for a gift exchange. There will also be a couple of small things for a prize draw, so the more people who come the better!
